New Expansion Brings Deep-Sea Exploration, System Updates, and Endgame Changes

Grinding Gear Games has announced the upcoming expansion Path of Exile: Curse of the Burning Flame, which will launch on July 24 (Pacific Time) across all available platforms as a free update. The expansion introduces a new challenge league, major improvements to the Abyss and Legion systems, the return of the Templar Mercenaries, a new Ascendancy class for the Scion, updated endgame mechanics, and additional crafting and character progression features.

The new content focuses on exploration beneath the frozen oceans of Wraeclast, where players will search for forgotten artifacts, fight dangerous creatures from the depths, and uncover new sources of rewards. With the arrival of new systems and balance changes, Path of Exile Currency management and resource planning will become important parts of preparing characters for the expanded challenges.

Explore the Sunken Treasures of Wraeclast

In Path of Exile: Curse of the Burning Flame, players will meet Valerie, a dangerous pirate captain who needs assistance recovering lost treasures from the cold waters surrounding Wraeclast. By collecting scattered sea charts across the world, players can board the Sovereign ship and begin underwater expeditions.

During these journeys, players must dive into deep waters protected by special lanterns containing sparks of the Burning Flame. These lights allow exploration through dangerous areas filled with lost gold, valuable treasure chests, ancient artifacts, and hidden enemies.

When the lanterns begin to fade, players must quickly return to their underwater vessel before creatures that fear the light emerge from the darkness. This exploration system combines risk management with reward planning, creating new ways for players to approach progression.

Voyage Planning Adds Strategic Exploration

The expansion introduces a voyage board system that allows players to connect discovered sea areas and create large-scale underwater adventures. Players can revisit completed maps to claim rewards again while improving the benefits through different modifiers.

Each explored area provides unique effects during voyages, while random modifiers around the edges of the voyage board influence connected locations. By carefully selecting special sea charts, players can create profitable routes leading to treasure chests, Abyssal locations, and hidden artifacts.

For players looking to optimize progression, understanding how to manage Path of Exile Currency and valuable resources will remain essential when deciding which rewards and crafting opportunities to prioritize.

New Crafting Features and Item Transformation

The expansion adds a new crafting system called Burning Flame Crafting. Beneath the ship’s deck, players will discover a powerful device capable of transforming items into multiple ghostly versions, allowing them to select one final result.

Players can also collect special coins from underwater areas and use them to alter and reshape equipment in unique ways. These systems provide additional options for improving builds and experimenting with different item combinations.

Mercenaries Return with New Combat Options

The Templar Mercenaries return to Wraeclast, offering players new encounters and recruitment opportunities. Players can challenge these mercenaries in combat, obtain their powerful equipment, and recruit them as allies against regional enemies.

Within maps, players can request that a preferred mercenary return in future encounters with the same skills but refreshed equipment. The mercenary system also receives full Atlas Tree and Scarab support, allowing it to integrate with existing endgame progression.

The new Scion Ascendancy class, Sage, further expands character customization. After becoming a Sage, players can permanently hire a mercenary companion, with the ability to change the companion’s equipment and create additional build possibilities.

Abyss and Legion Systems Receive Major Updates

The Abyss system receives a complete redesign in Curse of the Burning Flame. Abyssal cracks now release energy into surrounding areas, affecting nearby enemies. Defeating these enemies attracts Abyss forces that emerge from the depths and create more intense encounters.

The updated Abyss experience includes improved visual and audio feedback, guiding players through encounters more clearly. Players can continue earning Abyss Jewels and Stygian Vises while benefiting from updated Scarab and passive tree investments.

The Legion system also receives reward adjustments. Players can use new Sanctuary Crystals to enhance unique armor before placing them into the Eternal Conflict Domain Crystal. This process creates Remnant Unique items with powerful modifiers based on selected unique equipment.

Endgame Changes and Spellcaster Improvements

The expansion introduces unusual locations on the Atlas. When completing maps influenced by Void Stones, players may encounter special anomalies that can only be explored once but may provide valuable rewards.

These areas can include encounters with merchants such as Cadiro Perandus or fully revealed Heist blueprint locations. Each anomaly connects to specific Atlas quadrants, adding more variety to endgame exploration.

Spellcasters also receive significant balance updates. More than one hundred existing spells have been adjusted, while Ascendancy classes including Assassin, Inquisitor, and Occultist receive new or redesigned features supporting spell-focused builds.

The update also improves caster equipment, especially wands, while introducing new ways to manage mana costs. New skills called “Pacts” allow players to make deals with powerful demons to enhance spells while accepting curses as a drawback.

New Progression Opportunities for Path of Exile Players

The release of Path of Exile: Curse of the Burning Flame represents another expansion of the game’s long-term progression systems. From underwater exploration and improved crafting to redesigned league mechanics, the update provides new challenges for both experienced players and returning adventurers.

For players preparing new builds, resources such as Path of Exile Currency will continue to play an important role in acquiring equipment, testing different setups, and adapting to new gameplay systems. Platforms such as EZBUFF provide information and guidance related to in-game progression, helping players better understand resource planning strategies.

As Path of Exile continues expanding its endgame structure, future updates are expected to focus on deeper customization, evolving league mechanics, and new ways for players to experience Wraeclast’s constantly changing world.
